you
( DEAREST )
If you use my shop, this is for you.
First of all: You are so welcome here! I love you, and the fact that we can connect this way.
I want to you know some things to make this journey a little bit richer than only shopping online. Your are here because you found me for a reason, so I hope this experience will make you - only - good.
We live in a world where shopping online is so easy, so cheap and so fast. My tiny shop is nothing like this, it exists so I can connect with you with my true stories made in a sustainable way.
So to maintain this shop in a sustainable way, I have put a price on my work and the shipping.
Let me explain.
( A BOOK )
My books are all published, written, design and photographed by me without any spons or funding. I have been working as a graphic designer since I got my degree in England (Falmouth) 2001, and started as a photographer (self taught) in 2013.
If I had had to hire a photographer, a designer and a publisher to make a book, oh my, this tiny shop would have been empty. So although I do all the steps myself, every part of the journey have to be done in a professional way by me, and every hour counts.
To sum up; The price reflects (some of) the amount of time and passion it takes to make a book, the high quality paper, the printing and the work it takes to get this copy to you.
Question often asked: «How to monezite the process of making a book in a sustainable way so I can make more books and pay for the printing?» - I don´t, but I make enough to make new books:
I never print a large amount of books so I can be able to handle them in my tiny garden studio, both in their presence and the time they need to be handle in the shop when you lovely people out there buy them, thank you! I want to send them personally with a little personal hello from me to you - always!
Many more books would make the printing cost of each book cheaper, but then I would have needed an extra storage, which I don´t have, and more time (and people) to sell and handle the sales, something that would make all of this idea about having a tiny shop - dead. I want to make books for you, connect with you, and do other work (I work as a freelance graphic designer and photographer, and I host workshops) , and most of all - I live life! - not being a part of a big selling machine. A big applause to all of you who are running small business - you rock!
A large amount of printed books is also a risk; if I don´t sell my books, they will be destroyed, and although paper is good fire food, I do not like the idea of overproduction. The price of my books therefore cover some of my work and the printing, and hopefully I get to send out all of my copies so I can keep on making stories for you now and then.
I print all my books in Norway (I should have printed them abroad; cheaper! But I believe in using local knowledge! = sustainability!) on Swedish paper (unfortunately, we stopped producing paper in Norway a few years ago…).
( SHIPPING )
To ship is not free, some people do this part of the work, and I think we should pay for it. And this is how I charge you for the shipping:
01.
I have chosen a format (size and the weight of the pages is carefully calculated) that is not too heavy so the books can be shipped abroad without too big costs. Lucky for me I like this medium format so much, and the soft cover with the flaps (ok, they do cost a little extra, but aren’t they lovely? Practical?)
02.
In Norway I ship out the books with «Norgespakke». Abroad I ship them out as «letters» - this is cheaper than shipping as a tracked parcel (please let me know if you want so, it will cost you 65 kr extra), but it takes a little bit more time. But we have time, don’t we…?
03.
I have added a little extra fee on the shipping to cover the cost of the printing of labels, wrapping card board, paper, paper tape... And yes, I only use paper when shipping, or I reuse old materials if necessary.
04.
I use the Norwegian Post only, because using different shipping options is too time consuming of my tiny shop.
N.B : Enter your country, and you will get the right shipping price! The shop will automatically show you «world shipping» ( like Canada, U.S.A, Australia, New Zealand and more…), so are you in Europe, or in Norway, you will get lower shipping fee when entering your correct address and country. Thank you!
( MISTAKES )
I do not like to do mistakes, or disappoint you… But such is life! I do my best to give you something that looks like the digital images of my work here in my shop, which is almost impossible. The thouch, smell and sight of a real book has to be felt in real life. And real life is oh, so less glossy than online, and I love it!
My printers do such a good work with my books, but now and then some pages turns out wrong. Your screens are calibrated differently, and may give different colours on print. Matte paper gives matte and slightly darker photos than on a screen. The print colour may vary from book to book, and and the light when reading the book will also change the hue of it. We are humans - Pure magic!
I look through every copy I send out, but please let me know if you get a copy with any big printing mistakes (e.g a BH white photo gone orange, big, white lines in the print, a page upside down or so - I have my blind spots too, and can overlook these beauty spots…sorry!), send me an email and I will get you a new book if possible. I let you keep the special gem with the beauty spots, of course..!
And I believe postman do what they can to bring the book safe to your home, but sometimes the book returns to me, they get lost, or it gets wet and damaged or your country decides to put on an extra handling fee on it…! Things I cannot not control. So sorry, I do not cover extra costs in your country ( I always pay taxes here in Norway for you) or damages caused under shipping, but hopefully there are ways to cover this in your country.
( KEEP IN TOUCH )
I love having connections all around the world. And wow, I think I have shipped out to about 30 different countries now, from Island up North to New Zealand in the South.
Please write to me if you have any questions or thoughts about my work, I would love hear - and to help, if needed.
Take care. Be kind. We are all connected.
LOVE HILDE
